Clean Energy Education Hub & Bede Sixth Form College
GenNorth was appointed to provide expert project management, technical governance, and assurance to the Executive and Corporation Board for the delivery of critical projects within the Group capital programme. Among these was the T-Level project at Redcar College, aimed at preparing the college for the delivery of the T-Level curriculum in healthcare and engineering. This involved refurbishing multiple areas of the college, including extensive strip-out, reconfiguration of spaces, and upgrading mechanical and electrical services. The project also included the construction of two large steel canopies for outdoor bricklaying and rope access training.
Key Challenges and Solutions The project faced several challenges due to prior undocumented remodelling and discrepancies in recorded building services information. GenNorth tackled these issues by conducting thorough on-site surveys and adopting a collaborative 'one team' approach to mitigate risks.
Working within a live college environment also posed logistical and safeguarding challenges. GenNorth implemented a robust access strategy, clearly differentiating DBS-checked personnel in orange high-visibility vests from non-checked individuals in yellow, who were escorted onsite. This innovative approach proved highly successful and has been adopted across other capital projects.
Achievements and Outcomes Despite stringent Department of Education funding criteria and a tight schedule, the T-Level project was successfully delivered on time and within budget. Practical Completion was achieved on September 5, earning praise from the College Principal and ETC Executive. GenNorth also coordinated the installation of IT hardware and furnishings, ensuring fully functional learning spaces by the start of the academic term.
Expanding Success: GenNorth's appointment was extended to April 23 with the inclusion of the Clean Energy Education Hub (CEEH) encompassing additional projects like the Clean Energy Education Hub at Redcar College and a three-story extension at Bede Sixth Form College. The CEEH, a 1,000 sqm facility, supports training in renewable energy technologies and complements the clean energy initiatives at Tees works. By collaborating with Redcar Council, GenNorth helped secure funding via the Government’s Town Deal programme, aligning with the Levelling Up agenda.
GenNorth’s proactive approach, technical expertise, and innovative solutions have not only delivered key infrastructure projects but also set new standards in safeguarding and construction logistics in live environments, leaving a lasting impact on the Group’s capital programme
